Steam has long since dominated the digital distribution market. Sure there were contenders like Direct2Drive or the games listed on individual publisher sites, but Steam was such a giant that it is essentially a monopoly. Fast forward several years, nothing has changed, despite EA's latest attempt in EA Origin. The revamped EA Downloader was EA's own digital distribution system.
EA Origin is finally making the move. Steam had no contenders before and even when EA made Origin the only means of running Battlefield 3, it still wasn't such a great contender. While Origin is still far from an equal alternative, it seems EA is serious about pushing it as they add 11 publishers to their collection. Origin only listed EA games previously but now they list games from Paradox, 1C, etc.

A few weeks ago, we made a post about 3DS demos. There were four that was available almost immediately on the Japanese Nintendo eShop, but nothing was really said about the rest of the world. As we waited patiently after being teased by Nintendo's update that claimed to support demos, the rest of the world are finally getting somewhere. Nintendo of Europe announced yesterday that demos would be distributed the next day. Soon after, Nintendo of America made a similar announcement. Currently the only demo I see is Resident Evil: Revelations, but a few more are scheduled in the following days including Cooking Mama 4 and Mario and Sonic at the Olympics.

The Playstation Vita sold 72,000 units in the second week and it dropped even further in the third week to 42,000. The Vita's low sales is probably from a lot of factors. Similar to the 3DS launch, it lacks the console-moving games, there really aren't too many games for the device right now and there are none that have a huge following. The price and timing was also bad, considering Nintendo's 3DS is at a strong point thanks to the release of Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3DS, understandably the holiday sales shifted entirely to Nintendo. The question is how will Sony react to this disappointing performance. Will they drop prices drastically like Nintendo? Or will they simply wait it out for a few more titles to be released?

Nintendo's next generation console, the Wii U may have an app store. The latest rumors state that outside of what Nintendo is used to with the Wii and DSi shops, they will be distributing a larger number of apps that are not limited to just games or very basic apps. It seems like a natural move given that the Wii U is fairly versatile. The tablet controller has it's own processor and can be used independent of the console is most definitely a perfect outlet for Apple style apps that are cheap and light. The power of the console itself can also be exploited, I can only hope that developers will hop on and make use of all the features that the Wii U will have. ...by Published on 12-28-2011 01:16 AM
Remember how Nintendo pushed out the last update and said that it would support demos? Apparently our friends in Japan are fortunate enough to have in their hands the demos now. The games include Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, Resident Evil: Revelations, Rhythm Thief and Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D. Hopefully demos will be available shortly for North American and European users. ...
