Let's Angel Case Review - DS Database - 10-04-2007

Special thanks to:

For providing the Let's Angel Case for this DS Database review.

- Introduction -

Let’s is a company that was completely unknown to me.  After a bit of research, I found out that it is a Korean manufacturer that specializes in creating accessories for various video game consoles.  They have things from wires to screen protectors.  The DS/DS Lite section seems to be quite bland, with a few straps, a single type of screen protector and these cases.

The sleek design of the DS Lite is beautiful, but sometimes the outer casing gets scratches or damaged.  There are thousands of ways to prevent this other than being careful.  Products such as cases, pouches, sleeves, silicone skins and crystal cases thrive on DS Lite users that want to keep their handheld in pristine condition.

The DS Lite will remain in pristine condition if it has proper protection.

The Let’s Angel Case is a type of protection for the DS Lite called a guard mask.  Basically they are pieces of polycarbonate that grip onto your DS Lite console.  The idea is that these will take all the beating, the scratches and the impact instead of your DS Lite.

The packaging is quite nice, it gave me a very good first impression, other than the fact that they spelt manufacturer as "Manufufacturer".

- Build Quality -

The review sample of the Let’s Angel Case I have received is in a nice shade of black.  However, our sponsor KickGaming.com offers the Let’s Angel Case in white, black, blue, pink and red, however, the manufacturer also offers a completely clear Angel Case.  I am assuming that all of the other colors are similar if not the same.

The black Angel Case looks very nice, the camera makes it look lighter than it really is.

The black Let’s Angel Case is solid black, and it matches the back of the Onyx Black DS Lite.  It isn’t glossy, but because it covers pretty much all of the gloss, it doesn’t look odd at all.  However, one oddity is that the Let’s logo is imprinted in a silver piece of mental on the top piece of the Angel Case, however, it is backwards, facing the slot 1 of the DS Lite.  It seems very odd to place it there.

This picture is upside down, but when it is the right side up, at least it looks nice.

The Angel Case uses polycarbonate, which makes it different from the hard plastic cases and from the soft silicone cases.  You can almost say that polycarbonate is somewhat of a mix.  It is somewhat soft and sticky, however, it is mainly solid and smooth.  It is sticky enough to grip onto a table.  The truth is, the Angel Case’s surface is hugely similar with that of the Dragon Guard Mask.

The Angel Case is similar to the Dragon Guard Mask, but not the same.

The polycarbonate is a huge advantage.  Generally the silicone cases are far too sticky.  They cling onto the pockets of your pants, they are a huge magnet for dust and you simply can slide it even a centimeter past the table.  The plastic cases are bulky and heavy, they crack, and because they can’t bend very easily, extra pieces are added to allow the case to open and close, these piece get in the way of different areas of the DS Lite, for example, mine partially blocks the L and R buttons.  What the Angel Case can do is offer a very light solution that is slightly grippy but mainly smooth, a bendable but mainly solid case with a very sleek surface.

The Angel Case is a little over a millimeter thick, which barely adds any weight to the DS.

The difference between the Angel Case and the Dragon Guard Mask is that the Angel Case has their logo imprinted on the front, and shaved off a few pieces from the back of the Dragon Guard mask.  These pieces were used to further clip on the guard mask to the DS Lite, clearly it was completely unnecessary.  The Let’s solution removes a bit of bulk, but adds one annoying logo.

I really hate this logo.

- Usefulness -

The point of the Angel Case is to protect the DS Lite from small things like dirt to big things like scratches.  In theory, placing a piece of polycarbonate in front of the DS Lite should work, and as far as my week of throwing the Angel Case around, it does work very well.

Guard Masks are the best way of protecting your DS Lite.

I have been treating my DS Lite very well ever since I got it.  The plan is to sell it back out mint condition in a few years when the new handhelds are out.  The Angel Case does a very good job of protecting the DS Lite, but sometimes it gets in the way of the power on buttons or even the sound adjustment.  If you are looking to protect your DS Lite, guard masks are the way to go because they look great, and they do their job really well.

Looks good, even without the DS Lite.

One of the things I hate about having a guard mask is that I can’t use some of the accessories that are designed to take in a bare DS Lite.  There are so many types of cases or things that snap onto the DS Lite that I would like to have, but I simply can’t use them because of the extra thickness the guard masks add.

A millimeter or two does make a huge difference.

- Ease of Use -

Of course, I have used everything, from silicone cases and plastic cases to this new guard mask.  As far as I can tell, they all do the job fairly well, but all of the other cases have their quirks and they take a long time to get used to.  The guard masks are by far my favorite solution.  They are nice and sleek, and they don’t add too much bulk.  It took a grand total of a day to get used to.

Applying the Angel Case was as simple as snapping on the piece of plastic.  Remember to push it all the way in until you hear a quick snap or else it might fall off.  Other than that, there aren’t too many issues with the Angel Case, that is, until you take them off.

It is easy to put on, but insanely hard to take off.

Taking the Angel Case off is quite annoying because you basically have to yank them out, maybe pull a few of the clips off.  I can see these things snapping after a few tries, but surprisingly, none of them have given in yet.

- Functionality –

As mentioned before, the Angel Case is different from the silicone skins and the hard plastic cases.  The Angel Case is made from a material that is stiff but soft to touch.  The Angel Case does add thickness to the DS Lite, but leaves all of the slots completely accessible.  The DS Lite closes quite well with the Angel Case, and overall, it works as it should.

Holes are placed for the stylus, the power button, the headphone jack, the slot 2, and the volume adjuster.

I can’t imagine a better piece of equipment than the Angel Case.  With it on, you don’t have to worry about damaging the DS Lite, and still fully enjoy using the DS Lite.

The Angel Case comes in two pieces, these pictures are the front and back of these two pieces.

- Conclusion -

One of the reasons people get DS Lite consoles instead of old DS consoles is to show off the beautiful shiny design of the DS Lite.  The majority of protective skins cover it completely, which kind of defeats the purpose.  However, if you are looking to protect your DS Lite, and have the DS Lite still looking somewhat presentable look, the Let’s Angel Case is the perfect solution.
